DISCUSSION and SUMMARY

SUMMARY SHEET

Michael Hockensmith’s official military records show that he was in the Navy Reserve and missed the Vietnam War, although he would be classified as a Vietnam-era veteran.

He went to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois so would have been on active duty for that. It is unclear whether his time at ATKRON 128 and ATKRON 165 were in a drilling reservist capacity.

He is listed as being in the Navy Reserve from 1974 – 1980 which is a six year obligation. His performance record shows assignments up to 1977, so the remaining couple of years were most likely as a non-drilling reservist in the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve).

In any case, he got out as an Airman (E-3).

He earned a National Defense Service Medal and a COMNAVAIRPAC Battle “E” – most likely a unit award.

There is no “war” other than the Vietnam war during his time in the Navy Reserve but his records show he was stationed in the United States. Also, there is no Purple Heart award – let alone a “Purple Heart for valor” – whatever that means.

Hockensmith is clearly leveraging these claims to solicit money on the GoFundMe and Facebook fundraiser profiles. This may put him in direct violation of Stolen Valor. State specific laws on Stolen Valor may also apply.
