10022013 20:51 …A WALK THAT NEARLY ENDED TRAGICALLY…0430 THE ALARM COMES ALIVE . I HAVE TO QUICKLY SILENCE IT BECAUSE OF THE CONCERN OF WAKING THE FIRE FIGHTERS. THIS IS MY SECOND NIGHT SLEEPING AT THE NEWTON MS FD HOUSE . THEY WERE KIND ENOUGH TO ALLOW ME TO COME BACK HERE AFTER WALKING TO LAKE YESTERDAY. I WANTED TO GET UP BEFORE THEM SO THAT I COULD HAVE TIME TO DO A GOOD WORKOUT. MY PLAN DO ABS , EFFECTIVE YET QUIET ENOUGH SO AS NOT TO DISTURB ANYONE. 0510 AB WORKOUT DONE. NOW TO HOP ON LINE AND DO MY NORMAL MORNING ROUTINE. 0547 THE FIRE HOUSE ALARM GOES OFF THE THE FIRE FIGHTERS SCRAMBLE TO A CALL. I COULD HEAR THE CALL OVER THE P.A. SYSTEM. 18 WHEELER TURN OVER. I WILL PRAY THAT NO ONE IS SERIOUS INJURED. I HAVE THREE MORE HOURS TO GET ALL MY THINGS IN ORDER BEFORE MY RIDE BACK TO LAKE MS ARRIVES AT 0900. MORE TIME THEN I REALLY NEED . I WOULD PULL MY CART TODAY BUT THE SHOULDER ON THIS ROAD IS VERY VERY SMALL. BARELY ENOUGH ROOM TO WALK. THE TRAFFIC IS SPEEDING AT 55 MPH. JUST TO DANGEROUS. THE WEATHER SEEM NICE, VERY CLOUDY ONLY A 10 % CHANCE OF RAIN. SO I SHOULDN’T GET WET TODAY. ITS ONLY 8 MILES SO SHOULD BE ANOTHER EASY CALM DAY. I HAVE A STRONG HEAD WIND AND IT CAUSES OLE GLORY TO COME ALIVE. SHE WIPES IN THE WIND. LOVE HEARING THE FLAG SNAP IN THE WIND. I HOLD HER IN MY LEFT HAND SO THAT I MAY SALUTE ONCOMING TRAFFIC. AT TIMES I WILL GET HIT WITH A SIDE WIND OR TAIL WIND AND IT MAKES IT VERY CHALLENGING TO HOLD HER UPRIGHT. BUT NO WORRIES ITS ALL WORTH IT. NEVER DIP HER NEVER ALLOW HER TO TOUCH THE GROUND. THE TERRAIN TODAY ITS TOO BAD. SOME ROLLING HILLS THE ONLY REAL CHALLENGE IS THE LACK OF A SOLID SHOULDER. SOME OF THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC IS GETTING PRETTY CLOSE. IF I NEED TO I CAN JUMP INTO THE TREE LINE OF DITCH. I HAVE HAD TO RESORT TO THAT BEFORE. A FEW TIMES EVEN HAD TO JUMP INTO WATER TO AVOID ONCOMING TRAFFIC. PEOPLE TEND TO STEER WHERE THEY LOOK. SO WHEN THEY SEE ME AND LOOK LEFT THEY TEND TO STEER LEFT AND USUALLY EITHER RIGHT AT ME OR VERY CLOSE. DESPITE THE OBSTACLES TODAY I AM MAKING PRETTY GOOD TIME. THERE ARE MOMENTS THAT NO TRAFFIC IS COMING AT ME AT ALL WHICH GIVES ME A BREAK. HOWEVER FOR THE TRAFFIC THAT DOES MOST OF IT IS LARGE LOGGING TRUCKS. THIS MORNING WHILE WAITING FOR MY RIDE TO SHOW UP I DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT. I DOWNLOADED TO MY PHONE ONTO MY MP3 PLAYER MOTIVATIONAL SPEECHES THAT I FOUND ON YOU TUBE. I FIND THAT THEY HELP ME MAINTAIN MY POSITIVE AND OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK ON LIFE. TODAY WHILE WALKING I LISTEN TO THEM. MUST ADMIT THEY GAVE ME AN EXTRA BOOST IN MY STEP. MY FAVORITE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE THAT I READ TO MYSELF EVERYDAY IS SOMETHING WRITTEN BY A MISS MARIANNE WILLIAMSON ENTITLED ” OUR DEEPEST FEAR ” Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. TIME SEEMS TO FLY BY TODAY. 12:41 I LOOK AT MY BEARING ON MY GPS AND IT SAYS I HAVE ONLY A FEW MILES TO GO. I BELIEVE ITS BREAK TIME. NEED TO RECHARGE MYSELF. THE WEATHER REPORT CALLED FOR 95% HUMIDITY. I CAN FEEL IT CLIMBING. FOUND A NICE SHADE TREE, BROKE OUT MY SMALL PORTABLE FIELD CHAIR AND GOING TO DRINK DOWN SOME NICE COOL GATOR AIDE. AHHHHH LIFE IS GOOD. APPROX 20 MINUTES GO BY AND ITS TIME TO HIT IT AGAIN. I FEEL ENERGIZED AND READY TO FINISH THIS BAD BEAR. MORE SUPPORT. A FEW HAVE STOPPED TO SHAKE MY HAND SHARE HUGS AND THANK YOUS. AFTER WALKING FOR AWHILE I GET A FIX ON MY LOCATION 1.8 MILES LEFT. NO WORRIES A WALK IN THE PARK. SOON I AM AT THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO TURN LEFT TO REACH THE FIRE DEPT. JUST AS I CROSS THE SMALL STREET I HEAR A VEHICLE BEHIND ME AND ITS COMING FAST. I CANT QUITE TELL WHERE ITS COMING FROM. THIS IS OCCURRING QUICKLY SO I INCREASE MY PACE TO REACH THE GRASS AND THEN ITS THERE, ITS RIGHT ON ME I ALMOST STOP AND FREEZE BUT I PUSH PAST THE FEAR AND THEN IT HAPPENS. THE PASSENGER SIDE OUT SIDE MIRROR STRIKES MY BACKPACK, SPINS ME AROUND TO FAST TO REALLY REACT TO IT AND NOW I AM FACING THE TRUCK AS IT SPEEDS BY AND I AM KNOCKED OFF MY FEET AND HIT THE PAVEMENT WHERE THE TRUCK WAS JUST SECONDS EARLIER. I QUICKLY GET BACK TO MY FEET AND JUMP TO THE GRASS. I FALL TO ONE KNEE AND MY BODY IS SHACKING . HEART RACING , BLURRY VISION. I LOOK UP AND DOWN BOTH DIRECTIONS OF THAT ROAD AND NO TRUCK IN SIGHT. ALL I GOT WAS THAT IT WAS WHITE. GETTING BACK TO MY FEET I CATCH MY BREATH AND LOOK UP AT GOD. WOW DUDE…THAT WAS CLOSE. ANOTHER FEW INCHES AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN A HOOD ORNAMENT. THANK YOU FOR PUSHING ME PASSED IT. IT TOOK A FEW MINUTES TO SETTLE DOWN. BUT I WAS OK. DID A QUICK BODY CHECK AND NOTHING BLEEDING . OK JUST ANOTHER BLOCK AND I AM SET FOR THE DAY. LIFE IS GOOD. To Whom it May Concern:

This letter is to inform your office and the appropriate authorities of a situation that is untenable and that must be corrected immediately. A former US Marine, Leonard ” Mac ” McQuown , allegedly founded a charitable organization called Operation Walk America. I use the term allegedly because by all indication, he is using the “organization” as a ruse to solicit funds and convert them to personal use. I urge you to conduct an investigation and if your office determines that what I and others believe to be true is in fact occurring, we request that your office take immediate action to get Mr. McQuown to cease and desist.

I believe Mr. McQuown was given a Bad Conduct Discharge. He claims that he was a Sergeant in the USMC, but research discloses that he was given a Bad Conduct Dischrge and was demoted to the rank of Private First Class (it appears that he was dismissed from the USMC and reduced in rank due to being a deserter – over 200 days of unauthorized absence). Mr. McQuown was also convicted of check fraud and shoplifting. Undeterred, Mr. McQuown wears his USMC uniform in public. This is clear violation of MCO P 1020.34GIS which states that only retired service members and veterans who were honorably discharged may wear the uniform of a branch of the United States military. Mr. McQuown abridges this regulation frequently and should be made to stop.

In addition, Mr. McQuown launched Operation Walk America (OWA) more than two years ago. This organization purports to be a private nonprofit organization that raises funds to provide financial assistance to charities that focus on providing benefits to veterans. OWA, and, therefore, Mr. McQuown, promotes its cause by attempting to walk to every state capitol in the country, a total of approximately 15,000 miles. To date, OWA has never held a press conference to disclose the recipient of donated funds nor has it released any statements regarding the beneficiaries of collected monies. Based on information and belief, Mr. McQuown has embezzled the donated funds and converted them to his personal use. He has used the funds for hotel rooms, multiple gifts and to pay for a cruise to Hawaii to visit the state capitol there. At the very least, he has commingled the funds, which would also be a breach of his fiduciary duty.

I humbly request that your office look into this matter at your very earliest convenience. Conversely, if your office is not the appropriate agency to investigate the matter, I would reques that your office forward this statement to a more appropriate entity or individual. Mac McQuown is disgracing not only himself, but also the US Marine Corps and the thousands of men and women in uniform who proudly serve our great nation. You must prevent him from doing that.
