BACKGROUND
Archie Lee Allen comes to us from Burlington, Iowa. Allen died last month in a car wreck and was 71 years old when he passed away.
He was known to many in his community as having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Here Allen wears a USMC cap with Sgt (E-5) insignia.
Prior to Allen’s death, people had contacted us about him, doubting his service. About a year before he died, someone had reached out to him about his military service.
As you can see, Allen claimed to be “a Vietnam era Marine 3rd. Marine 5th Div. Srg. 0311 66-71.”
When Allen died, his funeral was held with Military honors.
Photos of the funeral confirm military honors. People commented to thank Archie for his military service.
Some people were skeptical that Archie had ever even served in the military. Among them were family members who had been at his side since 1966 and claimed that he never served. Recall that Archie claims to have served from 1966-1971.

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY
The NPRC could not locate military records for Archie Lee Allen. How could it be that a man could receive military honors at his funeral if they could not locate military records on him to prove that he served?
The answer: Everything was conducted based on hearsay. At a time like this, nobody wanted to be the one to question Allen’s military service.
Allen is buried in the Military section at Oakwood in Canton, Illinois. He was buried without a DD-214 being shown.
Several people warned others that Archie did not rate a military funeral.

I was born in Fort Madison, Iowa. Graduated from Fairfield, Iowa. Burlington, Iowa…well my family knows it well. If, indeed, Archie is a phoney–then, a public notice should be published in local media that the military honors rendered were in error. Whomever performed said graveside ceremony should be “retrained and put a counseling statement in their field 201 jacket. VFW Post? American Legion? Who dropped the ball on this action? I have deceased family members, Honorably Discharged, veterans buried across the Iowa-Missouri border. Someone needs to set the record straight. Aye. Briggs in Central Texas.
Capt. Do NOT blame the Legion or VFW. Blame the funeral home. It is THEIR responsibility to verify eligibility and have very fast and easy ways to do so. Legion and VFW posts get one, maybe two day’s notice that an honor guard is needed. it also has to be requested of the funeral home by the family of the deceased. It just doesn’t happen on it’s own.
Roy was not the VFW contacted several times prior to burial by the Funeral Home ? I was told that they were. Funeral Home said that they have no way of knowing who serves and that VFW verifies service. Also Funeral Home told me that VFW told them and assured them Archie was a Veteran but that they didn’t have DD214. Ball was dropped by several people. What makes all this an atrocity not just a mistake was the fact EVERYONE involved was told numerous times by family members he did NOT serve and we were told he is getting a Military funeral and grave and if he isn’t a Veteran than we will cross that bridge when we come to it. Well we have come to it and I am getting every excuse in the book from ” his estate don’t have money to exhumed him ” to ” it is over and done ” to ” really I am not sure that is Military portion of cemetary” what a joke of an answer he is buried almost under U.S. and POW flag, next to all heroes that served. On the flag pole was a plaque that said ” Dedicated to Military…..”. I have pics he is in Military grave. I also have all my phone records where I called NUMEROUS people, NUMEROUS times pleading case he was not in Military. So yes it is several people fault he was buried in undeserving Military grave. Own your mistakes!
Deb, Not buying the funeral homes claim of contacting the VFW, not even for one second. For openers, the VFW is ONLY for as the name states “Veterans of Foreign WARS”…no “Vietnam Era” veteran can join…and the VFW WOULD have a copy of his DD 214, as it is a requirement that they conduct a background verification to establish that the prospective member is in fact a real war veteran.
This funeral home should be ashamed of themselves and the public should know of the shoddy work they do.
Phil yes it did happen. I am sorry you don’t believe things like that happen but it DID. I was the one calling and talking to both VFW and Funeral Home, both are still blaming each other. VFW admitted to me, his Lawyer, funeral home etc that they did not have DD214.

Since he NEVER served as opposed to being an embellish-er I guess a hint would be that he probably couldn’t provide any pictures of himself. My experience is that all service members have pictures of themselves! I have pics of my Dad (WWII), Grand Dad(WWI) Great Great Grand Dad (Union Army) and now one of my own USAF Active in Afghanistan now. Thank you for your diligent work to this mission.
Archie Allen has several facebook profiles. Seems as though he has been running from the truth for a long time.
This POS should be putted in tge local papers. The steaming pile of porcine excrement deserves to have his grave marked altered to brand him as the sack of shit he is.
