BACKGROUND

Richard Allen Sheetz (III) comes to us from Grand Junction, Colorado. Sheetz is 33 years old as of January 2020 – the time of this writing.

Richard Allen Sheetz – Mugshot

Sheets got into a dust-up and took exception when he felt he was disrespected as a combat veteran.

While giving a bad review, Sheets often cites that he is a combat veteran…

Sheetz claims he is Native American, and skills he learned with both an axe and a deer knife came in play when he was in hand to hand combat in Afghanistan.

In a discussion group related to the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, Sheetz claims he was the military adviser for several admirals and was at Forward Operating Base Chapman in Afghanistan…

He left a bottle of piss on the admiral’s desk…

Sheetz gave a summary of his USN military service here…

Sheetz provided more claims on his LinkedIn page, this time claiming he was assigned to SEAL Team 2 and EOD 11 in a support role for most of his time in the Navy…

He mentions “SIPPERNET” [sic] twice. Most know it as “SIPRNET.”

Although it is beyond our mandate, he also claims on his LinkedIn page that he was an Israeli Defense Force adviser and a military consultant for the French Foreign Legion.

Some people were skeptical and asked Military Phony to look into these claims.

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY

The records show that Richard Sheetz served in the US Navy from 12 Jan 2005 to 29 June 2007. He was discharged as a SN (E-3).

It is a shorter than average enlistment, so it suggests he got out early for some reason.

OTHER RECORDS

His photograph was found in the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) 2006 cruise book on page 429 under the ‘Carrier Strike Force Seven’ section.

Sheetz was also found under an arrest and custody record for the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado.

COMBAT VETERAN

Not quite sure how one would characterize a US Navy combat veteran. If it is confirmed by a Combat Action Ribbon, then Sheetz does not fit that criteria. If he would have been involved in hand to hand combat in Afghanistan, whether he used and axe or deer knife or small arms, he most certainly would have a Combat Action Ribbon – he does not.

If a combat veteran is someone that was aboard a ship in the waters supporting a combat action, and either fired missiles or launched planes in direct support of that mission, the ship is usually given a Combat Action Ribbon but it is not an individual award. It may be a truthful claim of the sailors on board to claim they were a combat veteran.

It is highly doubtful that Sheetz was attached to SEAL Team 2. Although it is difficult to disprove his claim of being with EOD 11, he is not listed with them in the USS Ronald Reagan cruise book, but he claims he was “attached” with them.

Also very hard to buy the story that he was a military adviser to several admirals while he was an E-3. He seems like he was on support staff so perhaps he provided technical vs. SME (Subject Matter Expert) support during briefings and overstates his role? Can’t really say.

A chief that served on the USS Reagan with Sheetz was contacted to get his reaction to a few of Sheetz’ claims.

  • Claims medical staff said he wasn’t mentally fit
  • Less than pleased about the TAD to EOD claim
  • Axe fighting claim – “sounds like him”
  • Someone from CCSG7 says it sounds like his BS
  • Not clean, several health issues
  • Couldn’t be trusted to stand any watch
  • Bragged about a computer program that made fake credit card numbers

DISABILITY

Some also wondered if the following claim was true about a disability, how would he rate this money? There is no Purple Heart in his military records. He claimed in another post it was offensive to assume he had PTSD.

STOLEN VALOR

If the claims by Richard Sheetz were used to leverage work, military or civilian promotions, or anything else of value, he may be in violation of Stolen Valor laws. State laws may also apply.

  1. […] very nice folks over at militaryphony.com send us their case on Richard Allen Sheetz […]

  2. 5th/77th FA says:

Seems as if ex sn 3 Richard Sheetz took a great big sh^tz on a piss poor record of service. He does have that classic meat gazer’s stare going for him. May have used his knife to open up a locked fan room door. TAH awaits to add to your google fame, Dip Sheetz.

  3. James Houk says:

Every unit has that guy. The guy who consistently breaks his own records in the field of “shitbirding.” This guy is going for a lifetime achievement award. He uses his LinkedIn page to bitch about the many jobs he’s been fired from while simultaneously declaring himself the greatest English teacher in Japan. This one is truly special!

  4. Contractor1803 says:

Sent the link to him. He acts like there is nothing amiss.

  5. Please use our submission form. Do you have evidence?

  6. If you are a deck monkey, just tell folks you were a deck monkey. I wasnt anything special. I made rank doing a boring job and got out in four. Honorable discharge and not a lot of excitement.

  7. Mike says:

Just think about all those true heroes who never hot home. If you saw “the elephant” you don’t need medals or hats to impress anyone. Just look in the mirror & be true to yourself. War sucks to anyone who has seen it!

  8. Fred says:

    Right on bro!

TAH’s “OAE CPO USN Ret” posted this link to a Halo costuming community forum thread (one of the admins is a veteran) from 2009 where the depth of this guy’s psychosis is proudly on display. The fun specific to his case starts on page four, climaxing on pages 12-14 with an actual appearance by the individual. Took me about 90 minutes to read through it all, which I had not intended to do. But could not turn away from as the train wreck evolved.

In better times the individual would surely be institutionalized and kept out of society’s way. Instead, he has the internet.

  10. Jeff says:

I can’t believe his LinkedIn, horrible. He’s a few cards short of a full deck.

  11. Todd Westlie says:

I especially like his claim to being an E3 advisor to Flag Rank Officers. They really need his input I tell ya, lol. I was a Tonkin Gulf Brown Shirt ‘Roof Rat’ on the Hawk back in the early 70’s. Admirals didn’t ask my opinions about anything!

  12. Kno Body says:

An E-3 adviser to admirals? Yeah right. Hell, in a major command headquarters (EUCOM, SOCOM etc) an E-3 wouldn’t even make coffee! Why? Because there are literally no lower enlisted personnel around but about eight zillion O-4’s and O-5’s.
