BACKGROUND

Robert Gene Hayes comes to us from Santa Maria, California but has lived in Hawaii. Hayes is 64 years old as of May 2019.

One of the first things that stand out about Hayes is that he is a tall man…

We will provide additional claims as proof of this, but for now keep in mind that Hayes claims to be a Vietnam veteran. Here he wears a ball cap that states “CENTRAL COAST VIETNAM VETERANS.”

Hayes’ height and size are significant because he was quite the athlete in high school and college.

In fact, Hayes earned a football scholarship to Nebraska and he was listed as part of the 1973 recruiting class as 6’6″ and 268 pounds.

In the Lincoln Star on May 1, 1975 Hayes was listed in the RED-WHITE game as an offensive tackle just a few short weeks before the last troops evacuated Saigon.

Hayes was listed on the Nebraska Cornhusker roster in 1977 as a junior, but we were not able to find him listed as a senior in 1978.

So, his time seems accounted for between 1973-1977.

Here is another ball cap with “VIETNAM VETERAN” on it…

And another that says “1st MARINE VIETNAM VETERAN.”

Here is more of the US Marine Corps bling…

Here is where it starts to get interesting. Hayes begins to mix and match Marine Corps with Army Special Forces…

Hayes – Facebook

Although in the following photo, it appears to be some kind of military spoof or historical recreation event, the US Marine Corps and the US Army Special Forces are mixed and matched.

Bob Hayes – Facebook

Although they are not labeled, Hayes posts a lot of Vietnam-themed photos and graphics to his Facebook page…

Then, there is not only the implied Vietnam veteran claim, but a claim of a Purple Heart…

Hayes commented on the above photo when someone asked him who was sitting beside him.

Hayes’ wife shed some light on some of her husband’s military service…

Then she posted about him on Veteran’s Day claiming that Bob was in a “Black Op group.” Had that guy not had the helicopter parked out back this story may have turned out differently.

Someone that knew Bob from high school asked Hayes about his Marine Corps service…

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY

SUMMARY SHEET & ASSIGNMENTS

The NPRC could not find any military records on Robert Gene Hayes.

This is not too much of a surprise since Hayes’ time is accounted for in college due to newspaper articles having to do with his football career.

Earning a football scholarship to Nebraska is quite impressive, so it is a bit puzzling why he claimed that he was in Vietnam. The answer may lie in an old website that Hayes ran advertising treatment of PTSD citing his Doctorate Clinical Psychology.

Hayes archived website “AdviceForVeterans.com”

Hayes does not appear to have been in the Marine Corps or Army Special Forces since records could not be located and his timeline is accounted for.

It appears that Hayes does not have a Purple Heart.

STOLEN VALOR

If the Combat Wounded – Purple Heart and other claims by Robert Hayes were used to leverage work, promotions, or anything else of value, Hayes may be in violation of Stolen Valor laws. State laws may also apply.

Hm. Graduating from MCRD is “not for public consumption”. Must be that “Secret Boot Camp” they kept us all in the dark about. Those were the Recruits that trained at night, wearing black clothing, and black face paint, and only shouted cadence in a whisper. Their DIs weren’t allowed to yell at them, just to whisper in a threatening tone. When they graduated, they did it in the basement.

  2. Thomas Owens says:

I was an Army Spec-4. I never see anyone clan to be an E-4. It always has to be Special Forces, Green Beret, Marine Sniper. I guess if you’re lying, lie big. Sure don’t understand why people want to do this.

Us Spec/4s ran the Army in my day. When people ask what my Army rank was I say “Full Bird Spec4” 🙂
