BACKGROUND
Peter Thomas Helton comes to us from New Albany, IN. He is 43 y/o as of November 2018.
On Helton’s Twitter page, he displays a license plate that implies he is or was an Army Ranger.
On Peter Helton’s LinkedIn page that is shared with his wife, he claims he was in the Army for eight (8) years, was a Scout Sniper and was awarded two (2) Purple Hearts for wounds sustained in combat…
He had addresses that supported his claims of being in the U.S. Army which include Fort Polk, Fort Hood and Fort Benning.
People that doubted his stories came forward.
Peter Helton’s military records were requested through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY
Although it would appear that Peter Helton did not serve, his situation was looked into further and it was determined that he has served or is serving with an Indiana state guard of some kind. State level military service has a different FOIA process but if he had ever served in the U.S. Army (regular) he would have shown up on the FOIA request to NPRC.
Certainly, if he had attended Ranger training or sniper school. We have heard of ‘scout sniper’ when referring to the Marine Corps but this is the first we’ve heard the term used in context to the U.S. Army.
The DoD Manpower database was searched for dates that he claimed he was in the Army, so there were multiple negative results over multiple years searched, but we included the year 2000 as one that was indicative of negative results.
Since he claims he has two Purple Hearts, he could only have gotten them while on active duty. The only exception to that was the terrorist attack on the reserve center in Tennessee.
So, the national records that we obtained indicated that they could find no record of service for Peter Thomas Helton in the U.S. Army.

The clown is full of lies. On his Linkedin page, he claims to have received an associates degree from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. The academy isn’t an accredited school and doesn’t hand out diplomas. It’s the training school for all who want to be police officers in Indiana and certificates of completion are issued for each segment of training completed.
You mentioned that he might be a member of a state force. He could be a member of the Indiana Guard Reserve. it’s a state defense force that is completely voluntary and receives no pay. They are in no way affiliated with the US Army or Indiana National Guard, though they sometimes do train with Guard units. They aren’t eligible to attend any military schools and don’t build military retirement points. It’s pretty much an adult version of the Boy Scouts. my only experience with them was at Camp Atterbury. They were the guys driving the buses for deploying troops and directing them where they needed to go for deployment processing and training.

I went to Peter Helton’s Twitter account, and he hasn’t even posted anything on there since 2011…and most of that was stuff like HEY! Look how much money I made today! $300!

Mr Maynard’s comments are not entirely correct. State Defense Forces are authorized by Title 32 USC 109 (the authorizing statute for the National Guard) and are under control of the state’s Adjutant General. National Guard Bureau (NGB) J-5 is the Executive Agent for SDFs.
SDFs typically support their respective states National Guard. What level and types of support are dictated by their respective state’s enabling legislation. I’m a retired Regular Army officer serving in an SDF , and I can assure you its a lot more than “an adult version of the Boy Scouts”. Granted, the quality of SDFs varies across the spectrum and we do attract our fair share of nut cases. Mr Helton appears to be one such. TAG of Indiana needs to be notified of your findings.
I worked for this clown for 3 days in NC for hurricane relief before the mother company fired him and his whole “command staff” he told us he jumped in to Haditha Dam with 3/75 and that’s what got this whole investigation started.
