BACKGROUND

Fabian Rebolledo comes to us from Denver, CO.  He is 43 y/o as of November 2018. His middle initial is listed as an “A” but other times as a “D.”  Often, it is not listed at all.

Rebolledo has been in the news recently.  He was even featured in the July-August 2013 issue of Playboy magazine.

The issue is that he was not a United States citizen, but served in the U.S. Army and was deported after serving due to some trouble that he got into with the law.  With the help of others, including the media, he was granted citizenship and allowed to come back into the United States from Mexico.

Some of the stories are listed below…

Then there was the article in the July-August 2013 edition of Playboy.

Fabian Rebolledo poses for a photo in front of the border fence post that bears his name.  Photo taken on the Mexico side of the fence as Rebolledo was trying to get back to the U.S.

In several of the above articles, Rebolledo talks about being in Kosovo clearing landmines and retrieving dead civilians.  He also claims he was shot by a sniper which would also carry with it the implication of a Purple Heart.

Here are excerpts from the article links supplied above…

In the television interview with WNDU Channel 16, they included the claim that Rebolledo was wounded both in the website text as well as in the broadcast version.

Looking at Robello’s medals combined with other photos, there seems to be some inconsistency in how they are arranged…

Not only do the medals become arranged on one bar, but the order is switched around.

In the above photo that he posted on his Facebook page, Rebolledo was questioned about his medals and the way that he wears the uniform.

According to BuzzFeed, Rebolledo served prison time for driving with an expired driver’s license…

In the Playboy article, Rebolledo claims that the military taught him how to kill people and then just threw him away…

Several men from Rebolledo’s unit came forward and said he was never wounded, was deported because he did not meet his service obligations due to a pattern of misconduct – namely a DWI and failing a urinalysis.

Rebolledo was also featured in a recent This Ain’t Hell article about deportations and the military.

Fabian Rebolledo’s records were requested through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY

Fabian Rebolledo spent two and a half years in the US Army which is an odd time frame for an enlistment.

He was discharged as a Private First Class (E-3) which conflicts with his claim of SPC (E-4).  He did claim in the Salon article that he beat someone up and was demoted, so why would he pin the rank back on when protesting his deportation?

There are some missing assignments from 1998 to 2000 and we have requested additional military records, but at this point, there are some obvious flaws.

Even if he was an E-4, there is no way he would have been awarded a Meritorious Service Medal (MSM).

Upon closer examination of his medals…

There is no Purple Heart that would suggest he was wounded as a result of combat.

We tried to match up the ribbons on the left-hand side of his chest.

He’s wearing them exactly in the wrong order of precedence.

Also, there is an Army regulation that bars one from wearing the uniform for political purposes.  Although not an election, there was a social activism component to his wearing of the Army uniform.

He was in Kosovo, according to people he served with and this newspaper article from the July 1999 Army Times.

As discussed, we have serious doubts that he earned the MSM that he is wearing.  He may have been awarded the OSR if he served over 9 months in Albania/Kosovo.

The Kosovo Campaign Medal wasn’t established until May 2000 for the Kosovo Defense Campaign.  The UN Medal is also in question since he would have to be with the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Yugoslavia.  That unit phased out in 1996.

He is wearing unit awards on the left side of his uniform – a Presidential Unit Citation with an Oak Leaf, an Army Superior Unit Award and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

He was only authorized to wear the unit ribbons when he was on Active Duty with that unit.  He would not be authorized to wear those unit awards upon discharge or leaving the unit.

According to his records, Rebolledo was a 13B10 – a cannon crewmember.

Also, as his unit members point out – a cannoneer would not be pulled to go on duty to sweep for landmines, which put him in a position to be shot by a sniper.

Rebolledo had trouble with the law in Nov 1999.

He was arrested again in 2006 for driving alcohol/drugs and a suspended license.

He was arrested again in 2008.

It just seems like the media could have picked a better representative to make their case.

Fabian Rebolledo clearly has leveraged the wearing of the uniform, improperly on a number of levels, to gain points with the public in the fight for his cause.  Could he have actually hurt his cause in the process?  Well, he’s back in the States.

clearly a dud — and this is not in his defense by any means– but if this guy was in Kosovo, and then congress later approved a ribbon for it he would have been approved to wear it retro– (Army famous for that– i have a ribbon from Korea in the same manner– was approved 4 years after i left)

i am the cav… up front alone unarmed and unafraid

Sounds like ICE ought to look at this guy. Citizenship under false pretenses?
