Larry Brown comes to us from South Carolina. He was spotted on Facebook by someone that thought his uniform looked a bit suspicious. The first problem noticed was how the Naval devices were all worn above his ribbons. He also has a Command Ashore device on his uniform. After a quick check of the UDT/SEAL database, it was determined that he never graduated from UDT/SEAL Training. After a check of Naval regulations, it was determined that only a Naval Officer can wear the Command Ashore Device.

And then there are those posts that just make you shake your head. It would seem that his family has believed his story for years.

With all the information we needed a Freedom of Information Act Request was sent to obtain his records.

The conclusion we can draw from looking at his records is that Larry Brown was never a SEAL and did not retire as a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). He retired as an OTA1, Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, which is an E-6. The list of ribbons and awards that he claims is extensive. He was Awarded a Navy Achievement Medal, 4 Good Conduct Medals, 2 National Defense Medals and a Sharpshooter Pistol Medal.

Not supported by his records are claims of 3 Meritorious Service Medals, 3 Joint Service Commendation Medals, 4 Navy/Marine Commendation Medals, 2 extra Navy Achievement Medals, 1 Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Rifle Sharpshooter Ribbon. There are others but these are the high points.

  1. […] people at militaryphony.com have sent us their case on Larry Brown.  Several of the awards he had on made some people […]

  2. Michael Moody says:

I was at NavFac Centerville Beach Oct84-Dec86. Maybe I knew OA1 Brown, but he wasn’t in my section I was an OTA3, not a Seal, my trident stood for death from the past, not below. We were a smallish rate it’s been 30 years, and a lot of booze since then.
