CORRECTION: A Private First Class is an E-3, with a chevron of one stripe and one rocker, similar to a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps.
In fact, the box that the supply of PFC insignia comes in, even has the words, “Lance Corporal”, on the outside, or at least it did in 1968, when that rank first originated.
In the United States Army, there is a Private, E-1, with no rank, and a Private, E-2, with one stripe, which, as far as I am aware, is an automatic promotion after completing Basic Combat Training.
Of course, it's been many years since I was in the United States Army, so maybe things have changed.
